Try to listen to the chord you have created and hear each individual note. Try to hear the lowest note, and hear the highest note, then try to humm them out to be certain you have heard both the upper and lower note of the chord correctly. This will help your ear start listening to each note of a chord, instead of a single "sound". When you correctly humm the upper and lower notes, play them and say the name of the tone out loud. For example, lets say you played a power chord with an "E" and a "B" : ---------(b)--- ---(e)--------- Be sure you can hear both the E and the B, hear it in your head, then humm or sing the notes you hear. Now check yourself by playing the E alone. Does it match the note you are humming? I bet it was pretty close if not exact! Now do the same with the B alone. Does your humming of the higher note match the B? This means you are able to hear the individual tones. The farther apart the notes are (more octaves), the harder it will be to hear both the upper and lower for some people. Now that you have hummed the correct notes, go ahead and say the notes out loud and try to hear the notes individuality as discussed in lesson one. Do this practice until you can correctly humm or sing 15-20 chords upper and lower notes, then try this again with three note chords, you will need to hear and sing the upper middle and lower notes of the chord. Get 15-20 in a row without messing up, (or you will need to start over!) and your in good shape! On your way to being able to identify and sing/find any note you think of on the guitar. (this will take a while to get good at) __________________________________________SONGWRITING/TECHNIQUE____________________________________________________ Check out some music from another country and notice the differences. Maybe they play more on the upbeat, maybe they use more hammer-ons or pull-offs. Or sound more like a classical instrument. Listen and use the ideas to help widen your perspective. You can even look up more info on the net or at the library about how their music is written. This will help you gain influence from sources most people wont look. This will in effect make your style more unique. Try to find something you really like, some suggestions are: Spanish, jewish, arabian, japanese, russian etc. etc. Notice that most have their own unique scale patterns, or methods of playing those scales. Be sure to listen to all instruments not JUST guitar or strings. _____________________________________MY OWN MAYBE NOT SO NORMAL OPINION ON MUSIC___________________________________ A good place to get inspiration for me, is in the most abnormal places. When driving on the freeway, sometimes the noise of the traffic of tires, kind of forms a beat in my head and I think of a cool riff. Sometimes Ill even turn down my radio real low and have the music barely audible so that the sounds mix with the music. This will bring some strange sounds and feelings out. A great thing is listening to movie soundtracks (not pop msucians, composers like Danny Elfman) or just listen to some noise bands or any source of natural noise. Get out into nature sometimes you city FREAK! Appreciate the industrial side of the city! There is a whole genre of noise out there to listen to as well. Anyways these things I feel kind of break your mold in your head of wanting to play scales in order, and music by the book etc. If we all have the same training of scales and chords etc. It not only makes us better musicians, unfortunately and fortunately it makes us more similar. So you have to remember how music is to you when you first heard it... the virgin ear. The more you become a musician and seek different unusual music the harder it is sometimes to appreciate stuff that you USED to enjoy. The old music is too simple and you seek more.. This is the sign of a great musician and creative person so dont worry! But beware now you are playing for other musicians and yourself and sooner or later no-one will like you but the yngwie malmsteen and joe satriani shredders etc. So basically the point is this... You gotta keep it real and not get lost in only technique! Listen for the music of it all.. Then when you compose, you can please the average human and the soul, while intellectually challenging other musicians, artists and yourself. Personally I do this by listening to music I "used" to love, and listen to natural sounds of nature, and industrial noise as if it were a documented, composed, work of art I could buy as sheet music. You should see there really is no difference.. its all a matter of taste.. so keep your taste broad and your mind open! In music people often isolate genres etc. "I dont like metal" "I dont like country" etc. But this would be like if you said this about art.. you would be saying "I dont like portraits" "I dont like fantasy art" "I dont like nature scenes". How could you say such a thing about all the art out there thats portrait!? or "fantasy" From Salvidor Dali, to the Moanin' Lisa! Usually someone cant tell you they dont like a picture, or do like a picture.. until it is seen with their eyes! Why dont people do this with music? Its because clearchannel and the radio has brainwashed us all! Soon our kids will be hating the simpsons, because they are brainwashed too, they will only watch shrek in 3d and reality television! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! WHY DID THIS HAPPEN! Only YOU can save music and art! Keep an open mind people! Dragons, nature, metal, country can be cool in art AND in music! Dont box yourself in! Try it out and then say "Dude this sucks... but at least I KNOW now what I didnt before, instead of being brainwashed by others" Long rant this time.. -- Seacrest Out **brainphreak** ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ############################################################################################################################ ############################################################################################################################ ########################################## WRITTEN BY **BRAINPHREAK** ###################################################### ############################################################################################################################ ######################### FEEL FREE TO COPY OR DISTRIBUTE, BUT PLEASE LEAVE THIS FOOTER #################################### ######################### HERE FOR CREDIT.
